Seven Ways God Still Speaks — And How to Stay Spiritually Attentive
One of the most common complaints I hear from Christians is that they can't hear from God. "I pray, but it feels like the ceiling is made of concrete. I read my Bible, but it doesn't seem to speak to me. I'm waiting for direction, but nothing comes."
I understand that frustration. I've felt it myself. But over 43 years of ministry, I've come to believe that the problem is rarely that God isn't speaking. More often, the problem is that we're not listening — or we don't recognize His voice when we hear it.
Here are seven ways God still speaks today:
1. Through His Written Word
This is the primary and most reliable way God speaks. The Bible is not just a historical document — it is living and active (Hebrews 4:12). When you read Scripture with an open heart, asking God to speak, He will. The question is whether we're reading it regularly and attentively.
2. Through the Holy Spirit
Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would guide us into all truth (John 16:13). This guidance often comes as a quiet inner prompting — a sense of conviction, a nudge toward a particular action, a peace about a decision. Learning to recognize and respond to the Spirit's voice is one of the most important skills a Christian can develop.
3. Through Prayer
Prayer is not just us talking to God — it's a conversation. When we pray, we should also be listening. Sometimes God speaks in the silence after we've poured out our hearts. Sometimes a Scripture comes to mind. Sometimes a thought arrives that we didn't generate ourselves.
4. Through Other Believers
God often speaks through the body of Christ. A word of encouragement from a friend. A sermon that seems written specifically for your situation. A mentor who speaks truth into your life. We were never meant to hear from God in isolation.
5. Through Circumstances
God can use the circumstances of our lives to direct our paths. Open doors and closed doors. Unexpected opportunities. Difficulties that redirect us. Not every circumstance is a message from God, but when we're paying attention, we can often discern His hand in the events of our lives.
6. Through Dreams and Visions
Throughout Scripture, God spoke through dreams and visions. He still does today, though this is less common and should always be tested against the Word. If you believe God has spoken to you through a dream, bring it to a trusted spiritual leader for discernment.
7. Through Creation
"The heavens declare the glory of God" (Psalm 19:1). Nature itself is a form of divine communication. When we slow down enough to pay attention to the world God made, we can hear something of His character and His care.
The Key: Attentiveness
The common thread in all of these is attentiveness. God is speaking. The question is whether we're positioned to hear. That means slowing down. Putting down the phone. Spending time in the Word. Creating space for silence. Cultivating a posture of listening.
Don't be hearing impaired. God has something to say to you.
